In physical appearance both casino and online video poker machines look very
similar to good old slot machines - both are housed in shiny chromed cases, have
similar coin or credits slots and even make the same unmistakable noises to woo
players.
The most important difference between a video poker machine and a slot machine
is that video poker players can choose to hold or discard cards in the hope of
drawing a better hand, resulting in a better pay-out. This of course involves a
degree of skill as opposed to a slot machine where a player has no control over
the reels and potential pay-outs.
Also, casino and online video poker machines differ from slot machines in the
way that slots pay-out solely based on the combinations of how similar or
featured symbols are lined up. With video poker, a player wins when they make a
recognised hand of poker such as a flush.
A certain degree of skill is required in this selection process to achieve the
game's rated payback. In either case, all of the winning combinations with their
respective payoffs are shown on the front of the machine or on the screen, and
the machine automatically pays out the indicated number of coins or counts up
that number of credits when one of those combinations occurs.
In both casino and online video poker games, all winning combinations and
resulting pay-outs are highlighted on the machine or pop up on screen. Pay-outs
are made in coins or tokens or online credits. Regarding winning at video poker,
it is always important to remember that luck will dominate in the short term but
skill will dictate whether a player comes out ahead or behind in the long term.
